A typical day on the  Jiri to Everest Base Camp Trek:

At daybreak, a Sherpa knocks your door and offers you a cup of warm tea. You have time to freshen up, pack your bags, and assemble in the dining hall for breakfast before setting off on the day’s trek. We break for lunch after 2-3 hours on the trail. Along the way, we will take frequent breaks in order to have plenty of time to admire the scenic landscapes, take photos and interact with locals. The trek to the next teahouse or lodge will take an average of 3 hours, though sometimes more. After checking in, you can rest, shower, read a book or chat with fellow trekkers in your group. Dinner soon follows and there your leader will brief you on the next day’s itinerary. You then place your order for breakfast and retire for the day.

 Jiri to Everest Base Camp Trek: Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Kathmandu (1,300 m/4,264 ft)

Upon your arrival in the Kathmandu airport, our representative will meet you and transfer you to your hotel. Later in the evening, our representative will take you for a welcome dinner at a restaurant specialising in delicious Nepalese cuisine.

Day 2Kathmandu sightseeing & trek preparation

After breakfast, you have the option to partake in a guided tour of several historical and spiritual sites including the famous “monkey temple” Swayambhunath, the historic Durbar square, the sacred Hindu temple of Pashupati Nath and the Buddhist Shrine.

In the afternoon, there will be a pre-trip discussion where you will meet the other team members and your trek leader. In this session, feel free to ask any remaining questions you may have regarding the trek.

Day 3Drive from Kathmandu to Jiri (2,370m /7,774 ft), 89 hr drive

We drive northeast to Jiri through the mountain roads, a stunning journey of approximately 187km.

Day 4: Trek to Bhandar (2,190 m/7,183 ft), 5-6 hrs

Keep your eyes open for the scenic view of the incredible eastern Himalayas including Ganesh Himal, Langtang Lirung, and Dorje Lakpa in addition to the view of the Kosi River. We will stay the night in Bhandar.

Day 5: Trek from Bhandar to Sete (2,575 m/8,446 ft) 6-7 hrs & overnight at Sete

The trail we embark on today entails crossing several streams and passing through small settlements as we descend through dense forests. We will then climb through the forests to Surma Khola and proceed to Likhu Khola valley before tackling the ridge to the Kenja settlement. We will continue a steep ascent to Chimbu and finally arrive in Sete for our overnight stay.

Day 6: Trek from Sete to Junbesi (2,680 m/8,790 ft) 6-7 hrs

We begin the day with a climb through forests of magnolia, pine, maple, birch and rhododendrons to Lamjura La pass at 3,530 m and is the highest point between Jiri and Namche Bazar. Here we will have a splendid view of the surrounding green mountains. Descending the far side of the pass, we will arrive in Tragdobuk and Junbes. Here we will have time to enjoy the afternoon mingling with the inhabitants and gaining a unique sneak peek into their way of life.

Day 7Rest day at Junbesi

We have an additional day to explore the lovely village and learn about the local culture.

Day 8: Trek to Nunthala (2,330 m/7,642 ft) 5-6 hrs

Today we resume the adventure by crossing a wild stream and ascending a forested slope. You will experience the first full view of the Himalaya Mountains unfold before your eyes. The visible mountain ranges include Everest, Nupte, Lhotse, Makalu, Themseruku and Mera peaks among others. Continuing, we will pass through Salung, Ringmo Khola, Ringmo and cross the Trakshindo La pass downhill to Trashingdo through rhododendron forests to Nuntala for the evening.

Day 9Trek to Bupsa (2,300 m/7,544 ft) 4-5 hrs

We begin by descending to the Dudh Koshi River and then climbing to Khumbu where we will cross the bridge and continue up to Jubing and on to Churkha. Ascending eastwards, we will go up to Kharikhola, then descend and cross the suspension bridge before managing a steep climb to Bupsa for our overnight stay.

Day 10: Trek to Surkhe (2,290 m/7,511 ft) 4-6 hrs

Today, the trail ascends through a forested section to Kharte, where we face an uphill climb that will take us to Khari La pass. Here, we will enjoy the view of Gyachung Kang and Khumbila mountains before descending through Puiyan to Surkhe.

Day 11: Trek to Phakding (2,610 m/8,561 ft) 4-5 hrs

A pretty straightforward day with a climb to Chhiplung followed by a descent to Phakding for our overnight stay.

Day 12: Phakding to Namche Bazaar (3,440m/11,283 ft) 56 hrs

We embark on our trek for the day along the Dudh Koshi River that takes us through a series of suspension bridges and ultimately, to the famous Hillary Suspension Bridge where we have a wonderful view of Mt. Thamserku (6,608 m). We proceed through the Benkar, Chumoa and Monjo settlements to the checkpoint and the entrance to Segarmatha National Park. Ultimately, we arrive at the convergence of the Dudh Koshi and Bhote Koshi rivers. The next two hours of the trek take us downhill to Chautara from where we view Mt. Everest overlooking the Lhotse Nuptse ridge. One and a half more hours of walking finally brings us to Namche Bazaar, our designated stop for the night.

Day 13: Acclimatisation day at Namche Bazaar (3,440 m/11,284 ft)

To effectively acclimatise, we trek a few vertical feet during the day. There are several options for activities in the area, ranging from a walk to Thame, exploring Namche Bazaar, visiting khunde to visiting the Tourist Visitor Centre for a fascinating look at Sherpa culture and the bio-diversity of the Everest region. Later on, we will take a tour to Khumjung via the Syangboche airstrip for fantastic views of the snowy peaks of Kongde, Thamserku and Khumbila.

Day 14: Trek to Tengboche (3,867 m/11,283 ft) 5-6 hrs

Our trek towards Tengboche overlooks the splendid Himalaya range and takes us through Kayangjuma to Sansa. We journey through pine forests and cross the Dudh Koshi River via a bridge decorated with prayer flags and soon arrive in Phunki Thenga. This is a great area to spot wildlife such as musk deer or a heard of Himalayan Thar. A steep climb up into the pines brings us to Tengboche.There, we will have excellent close range views of Everest, Ama-Dablam, Lhotse, Thamserku and Nuptse. Tengboche is also home to the largest Buddhist Monastery in Khumbu.

Day 15: Trek to Dingboche (4,358 m/14,925 ft) 5-6 hrs

The trek today begins on the upper trail, which offers gorgeous views of Ama-Dablam and leads through several small villages before we arrive in Pangboche village. Moving onward, we pass through Imla Valley and continue up to the convergence of the Lobuche River before a steep ascent to Dingboche.

Day 16: Acclimatisation day at Dingboche

We will have the day to acclimatise in Dingboche, giving us time to rest, chat, explore the area, and admire the landscape.

Day 17: Trek to Lobuche (4,928 m/16,164 ft) 5-6 hrs

Today, our trek passes through Khumbu Khloa Valley and takes us to Phulung Karpo before an ascent to Chola Lake. We will enjoy awesome views of Mt. Pumori as well as the highest peaks of Nupse, Cholatse and Thamaserku among others as we approach Dugla. Hiking on, we ascend to Chupki Lhara then descend to the Khumbu Glacier moraine, and the peaks of Khumbutse, Lingtren, Pumori and Mahalanguur are unveiled.

Day 18: Trek to Gorakshep (5,160 m/16,929 ft) & Everest base camp (5,316 m/17,43 7ft) 7-8 hrs

Continuing through the Khumbu Glacier moraine, the trail ascends to Thagma Riju and further on to the Changri glacier. Approaching Gorakshep, we get a sneak peek of Kala Patthar hillock and a panoramic display of snowy mountain peaks. Progressing through Gorakshep Lake, we reach Everest Base Camp.

Day 19: Trek to Kalapathar (5,550 m/18,204 ft) hike and stroll back to Pheriche (4,200 m/13,776 ft) 6-7 hrs

We set off in the early hours of the morning to catch a glimpse of the spectacular sunrise that gradually reveals Mt Everest, colossal between the west shoulder crest and Nuptse. We then ascend to Kala Patthar where we will have an exhilarating vista of the full Himalaya range. We descend to Gorakshep and further on to Pheriche where we stop for the night.

Day 20: Trek to Kyanjuma (3,500 m/11,480 ft) 5-6 hrs

We follow the trail down to Phunki Tenga through Pangboche and steadily move through the pine forests in Dudh Koshi Gorge up to Sansa before reaching Kyangjuma.

Day 21: Trek to Khumjung to Monju (2,850 m/9,348 ft) 6-7 hrs

We head down into Khumjung Valley where attractions include a view of the scared peak of Khumbila, the location of a monastery that hosts a yeti scalp as well as the Hillary school.

Day 22: Trek to Lukla (2,800 m/9,186 ft) 4-5 hrs

On the final day of the trek, we will have distant views of the snowy peaks as we continue downwards through mountain villages. This is a great opportunity to interact with the local culture and customs, predominantly, and experience their spirituality as evidenced by the prayer stones and flags. Our adventure culminates with an overnight stay at Lukla.

Day 23: Fly back to Kathmandu

Today we return to Kathmandu. Upon arrival, you will be taken to your hotel. Feel free to rest and visit nearby shops for some Nepalese goods to take back home.

Day 24: Leisure at Kathmandu

The day is yours to enjoy – whether it is exploring more of the city or getting in some last minute shopping. In the evening we will invite you to a farewell dinner where you can enjoy the delicious Nepalese cuisine before your departure.

Day 25: Departure from Kathmandu

If departing, you will be taken to the international airport. Enjoy your flight back as you reflect on your great Himalayan adventure!

Note

When deemed necessary, the above itinerary could be adjusted in case of unforeseen circumstances such as bad weather or unpredicted natural disasters, which requires flexibility on the part of the trekker. Any amendments to the schedule would be in the best interest of the safety of the trekkers. The group leader or guide has the final decision in the case of any adjustments. In addition, flights to/from Lukla could be delayed for a few hours, or in some instances, for a day or two, due to poor weather conditions. In anticipation of this, it is advisable to add an additional night in Kathmandu.
